What Is Melasma?
Melasma is a common acquired pigmentation disorder that usually appears as brown or grey brown patches on areas of the face exposed to light.
It commonly affects the cheeks, forehead, bridge of the nose and upper lip.

Melasma Is More Than Pigment: The Vascular Component
One of the most important developments in our understanding of melasma is the recognition that it is not simply a disorder involving overactive melanocytes.
Research increasingly describes melasma as involving changes across several layers and systems within the skin.
These changes can include altered pigmentation, inflammation, disruption to the basement membrane, solar elastosis, mast cell activity and abnormal vascular behaviour.

Researchers additionally reported increased expression of vascular endothelial growth factor, known as VEGF.
VEGF is involved in the formation and regulation of blood vessels.
This helps explain why melasma should not be viewed simply as excess brown pigment sitting within otherwise unchanged skin.
There can also be changes occurring within the surrounding skin environment.
This does not mean increased blood flow automatically causes melasma.
It means vascularity appears to form one part of a much more complex biological condition.
Why Heat May Matter for Melasma
Heat deserves its own discussion because it is often confused with infrared light.
Light and heat are related concepts, but they are not identical.
An LED can emit a particular wavelength without its therapeutic purpose being to aggressively heat the skin.
Laboratory research has shown that heat stress can influence biological pathways involved in melanogenesis, which is the process through which melanin is produced.
Research has also explored inflammatory signalling associated with thermal stress and its potential effect on pigment producing cells.
Importantly, laboratory heat experiments may involve temperatures and exposure conditions that are very different from normal LED face mask use.
It would therefore be inaccurate to claim that a small amount of warmth from every LED device will automatically worsen melasma.
If your device becomes uncomfortably hot, causes prolonged flushing, burning or repeated darkening of existing pigmentation, stop using it and investigate the reaction before continuing.

Can Blue LED Light Make Melasma Worse?

What About Red Light Therapy and Melasma?
This is where the evidence becomes particularly interesting.
Red light is widely used within photobiomodulation for skin rejuvenation.
It is fundamentally different from ultraviolet radiation and also differs from shorter visible wavelengths such as blue light.
An integrative review investigating photobiomodulation for melasma identified studies examining selected red, amber and infrared wavelengths.
The research included selected wavelengths around 630 nm in the red range, around 585 nm and 590 nm in the amber range, and around 830 nm and 850 nm in the infrared range.
Some studies reported promising effects involving pathways associated with melanogenesis and the wider skin environment.
It does not mean that every red light mask can be described as a proven treatment for melasma. Published studies use specific wavelengths, doses and treatment protocols that cannot automatically be applied to every consumer device.
Consumer devices can differ considerably in wavelength, irradiance, treatment duration and total energy delivered.
It is therefore more accurate to say that selected forms of photobiomodulation are being investigated for melasma rather than claiming that red light will always improve the condition.
Likewise, individual reports of worsening pigmentation following red light use do not prove that red light universally causes melasma.
Melasma is complex and individual responses matter.
Can Near Infrared Light Make Melasma Worse?
Near infrared light sits beyond visible red light on the electromagnetic spectrum.
It cannot be seen by the human eye, even though the wavelength can still interact with tissue.
Research investigating photobiomodulation for melasma has included infrared wavelengths around 830 nm and 850 nm.
Some of this research has produced promising findings, but the available evidence is not strong enough to claim that every consumer near infrared device will improve melasma.
There is also not enough evidence to say that appropriately used near infrared LED therapy will universally worsen melasma.

Near infrared light should not automatically be confused with excessive heat.

Does Green LED Light Help Melasma or Pigmentation?

Green wavelengths around 520 nm to 530 nm are frequently discussed within cosmetic LED skincare because they interact differently with the skin from longer red and near infrared wavelengths.
However, the evidence needs to be calibrated carefully when discussing diagnosed melasma.

Tinted sunscreens containing pigments such as iron oxides are frequently discussed within modern melasma management because these pigments can provide additional protection across parts of the visible spectrum.
It is important to remember that this research concerns environmental photoprotection.

The exposures are very different.

Can You Still Use an LED Face Mask If You Have Melasma?
Possibly, but there is no universal answer for every person or every device.
