Red Light Therapy for Dark Circles, Under-Eye Bags & Crow’s Feet: What Actually Works

BEAUTY BY LIGHT / THE EYE EDIT

Red Light Therapy for Dark Circles, Eye Bags and Crow’s Feet

What actually works, what does not, and how to choose an LED face mask with realistic expectations for the skin around your eyes.

An evidence-led Australian skincare guide

A fine line beside your eye, a dark circle and a raised under-eye bag can all make you look tired. They do not share the same cause, and they will not respond to the same treatment.

That is the detail missing from many claims about red light therapy for dark circles. LED may help the appearance of some fine lines around the eyes. It cannot refill a hollow tear trough, remove a lower-eyelid fat pad or reliably erase every kind of under-eye darkness.

01 / BEGIN WITH THE CAUSE

One eye area. Three different concerns.

Before choosing a light setting, identify what you actually want to change. That determines whether an LED face mask is a reasonable fit.

01 / CROW’S FEET

Fine lines and texture. Red and near-infrared LED have the most relevant evidence for modest improvement in the appearance of wrinkles around the eyes.

02 / DARK CIRCLES

Pigment, vessels or shadows. A dark circle is an appearance, not a single diagnosis. Its underlying cause matters more than a generic promise to “brighten.”

03 / UNDER-EYE BAGS

Temporary puffiness or structural fullness. LED cannot remove the tissue responsible for a persistent lower-eyelid bag.

02 / WHERE LED HAS THE BEST CASE

Can red light therapy reduce crow’s feet?

It may soften their appearance, particularly finer lines. A randomised, sham-controlled study of a specific home-use mask combining 630 nm red light and 850 nm near-infrared light found better crow’s-feet scores in the treatment group over the study period. That is encouraging evidence for the device and protocol studied. It does not prove every LED mask produces the same result.2

Another clinical trial found reductions in measured wrinkles around the eyes with controlled red or amber light treatments. Those results should not be presented as a guaranteed percentage improvement from a different at-home device.3

What a good result looks like

Look for a gradual change in fine lines and texture under the same lighting, angle and facial expression. LED will not stop the muscle movement that creates expression lines or restore substantial lost volume.

See our LED face mask before-and-after guide for a better way to compare progress.

03 / THE DARK-CIRCLE QUESTION

Can LED light therapy remove dark circles?

There is no reliable blanket yes. Dermatology reviews identify pigment, visible blood vessels, irritation, swelling and shadows from hollowing as possible contributors. Many people have more than one cause.14

What you see Possible cause Realistic LED expectation
Brown darkness Pigment or irritation Do not assume LED will clear it. Identify the cause and use appropriate sun protection.
Blue or purple darkness Visible vessels beneath thin skin Evidence is insufficient to promise meaningful clearing with a home mask.
Shadow that shifts with light Hollowing or facial anatomy LED cannot replace missing volume or change bone structure.
Darkness with itching Possible irritation or allergy Address the trigger before adding device exposure to irritated skin.

A small study of a dedicated red and near-infrared under-eye device reported positive participant impressions of dark circles and other concerns. Its measured wrinkle-score change, however, was not statistically significant. It also tested an under-eye device, not the Beauty by Light full-face mask. The study is useful context, not a product claim.5

04 / PUFFINESS VERSUS STRUCTURE

Will red light therapy get rid of eye bags?

First, separate temporary puffiness from a persistent raised bag. Puffiness may change during the day. Structural bags tend to remain more consistent because they involve tissue beneath the skin.

Evidence is not strong enough to claim that a home LED mask reliably drains fluid or removes eye bags. LED may support some aspects of skin appearance, but it cannot remove or reposition a lower-eyelid fat pad.46

The realistic results guide

Most plausible: Gradual softening in the appearance of some fine lines around the eyes.

Less certain: Visible improvement in dark circles or temporary puffiness.

Not a realistic LED goal: Removing structural bags, filling hollows or treating an underlying medical cause.

05 / THE DEVICE MATTERS

Under-eye coverage and eye protection go together.

A face mask, a dedicated eye device and a clinic light panel have different shapes and exposure patterns. Research on one cannot automatically be used as proof for another.

The Beauty by Light flexible silicone LED mask comes with eye cushions. Use them according to your device instructions. Do not remove or reposition them to expose more under-eye skin. Skin shielded by a cushion may receive less direct light than exposed skin.

If you experience eye discomfort or visual changes, stop using the device and seek appropriate advice. Our LED face mask safety guide covers eye protection in more detail.

06 / MAKE YOUR ROUTINE COUNT

A smarter LED routine for eye-area fine lines

01 / CLEANSE

Remove makeup and sunscreen. Follow your device instructions for anything applied before a session. See what to apply under an LED mask.

02 / PROTECT YOUR EYES

Fit the mask and supplied eye cushions exactly as instructed. Keep the intended shielding in place throughout the session.

03 / BE CONSISTENT

Beauty by Light product guidance recommends at least 15 minutes, at least five times a week. Follow the instructions supplied with your exact model. Extra back-to-back sessions are not a shortcut to faster results.

04 / COMPARE FAIRLY

Take a baseline photograph. Repeat it after several weeks with the same lighting, distance, angle and expression. Track fine lines separately from darkness and puffiness.

07 / QUICK ANSWERS

Frequently asked questions

Does red light therapy help dark circles under the eyes?

It depends on the cause. Evidence is not strong enough to promise that a home LED mask will clear pigment, visible vessels or shadows from hollowing. Identifying the cause is the most useful first step.

Can an LED mask get rid of eye bags?

There is no good basis for promising that a home LED mask will remove structural lower-eyelid bags. Temporary puffiness can fluctuate, but a persistent bulge often reflects anatomy that light cannot reposition.

Can red light therapy reduce crow’s feet?

Studies of specific red and near-infrared devices have found improvement in the appearance of crow’s feet over several weeks. Expect gradual changes in finer lines rather than the disappearance of deep expression lines.

Should I remove the eye cushions to treat closer to my eyes?

No. Keep the protection supplied with your mask in place and follow its instructions. Do not trade eye protection for extra skin exposure.

Is near-infrared better than red light for dark circles?

There is not enough direct evidence to call either wavelength the best solution for every type of dark circle. The underlying cause and the device’s actual coverage matter more than a simple wavelength ranking.

How long should I use an LED mask before judging results?

Use your device consistently for several weeks and compare photographs under matched conditions. A convincing change in crow’s feet should remain visible beyond a temporary glow or a different camera angle.

THE BEAUTY BY LIGHT VIEW

Better expectations make better skincare decisions.

Red light therapy deserves a place in the conversation about fine lines and crow’s feet. Dark circles and eye bags require a closer look at their cause. Choose a routine for the concern you actually have, follow your mask’s eye-safety instructions and judge progress in honest light.
